I'd like to hear how the "never smack the child" crowd suggest dealing with 12 - 15 year old criminals.

Discipline is key to a good upbringing. However the young criminal can get away with a lot and they do. The reason for this is that that our government provides pathetic institutions to care for these children.

Unfortunately there is the prison-rape and prison-gangs to consider. Most people will not press charges against young people because both of these two facts make for an argument when it comes to sending a young criminal to these institutions.

I recall a local case where and 18 year old was arrested for speeding on a Saturday night. He ended up in the holding cells and was released that Monday morning when is dad got him out. The young boy committed suicide the next day. The reason was prison-rape.

The real problem is discipline! Not just giving your child a good hiding when he does something wrong like steeling but also Discipline from the institutions side! This is also true for our prison system! The system is breeding a hateful individual that will do the public more harm than good.

Also discipline has no effect when the young criminal is addicted to drugs. Thus the drug itself is the problem because it cost money to start with thus steeling, murder, violent crime and predatory crimes.

So what do we do? Hit them and make them listen! Good luck with that... Because discipline is half the battle rehabilitation and behaviour conditioning also needs to be applied.

I believe strongly that it might be much cheaper on our medical bills,as it seems that currently there is a misconception that every child who misbehave is either thought to be a mental case, abuse and needs very expensive treatment, just a thought??

I tend to agree and will love to say that there is nothing wrong with the youth of today. I respect them as they do me. After all I do volunteer my free time and listen to the many youths complaining saying that my mom and dad doesn’t understand me. I find these words to be true because dear mom is working or visiting her many friends and dear old dad hangs in the pub slurping away at his foamy golden elixir.

So neglected and alone the youth faces the many pitfalls without good old mom or dear old dad to point them in the right direction yet when trouble is on the horizon mom and dad screams shout and punish their offspring.

Then come the tender age of 18 and they the youth are left alone abandoned by family and labelled a troublemaking misfit. So these poor souls huddle together and must fend for themselves.

The problem was set as example and since we the adults of the world never took care of the many pitfalls our youth is left to make mistake after mistake and they will. So I say nay! Face the fact dear old mom and good old dad is to blame because they never took the time to get to know their children.

Thus the art of survival continues... Face the fact if good old mon and dear old dad spend less time with their distractions their children will be good children, They will work hard and be strong because some-ware someone beliefs in only them...

this reminds me of a south park episode where all the kids and even the parents were diagnosed with Attention deficit disorder.

Ah yes think got it on DVD. Love South Park... Still the topics in South Park are real-world stuff. And yes almost every single one of us can be diagnosed with some kind of disorder . I sometimes think that humans forgot how to deal with problems and rather take the magic pills that basically allow you not care about stuff.

But I don’t care how bad things get... all I say is BRING IT

Society right now is demoralized thanks to Media. We don’t care about the crime unless it hits you personally and even then you are just a number on a file. Fact is morality is dead. Humans don’t feel anymore. Even on one of these TV programs the father told his daughter to get out of his house just because she had some trouble adapting to his new lifestyle. I switched the TV off after that and am seriously thinking to never switch it back on again. Right now TV is on a “how low can we go to shock!” and I honestly was disgusted that, that is the massage we want to give our children.

No, Crime is the product of commercialization. The utter need to have more and more until we can stop calling ourselves human and start calling ourselves animals again... the internet can be controlled to a point where there are safe sights and good people. Yes you get your bad things and all that but right now I feel TV is doing more harm than good. The police are useless we establish that much so it is up to you to make sure that your child is a good person or not. I can’t have children myself so I can only preach...

Here here Rueben... It has become a serious issue that we don't notice anymore. An interesting thing is though in my youth, I hardly ever saw my parents - not cause i didn't want to or anything but always had so much to do... at a friends etc, riding bikes and so on. These days, if my kids want to go out, i have to schedule in order to take them. Even if it;s 3 blocks away so whilst i agree, we are to busy surviving/making money to be around, we are also forced to be around much more than used to be.

If I ever had children they would be given 4 things from me. An education, Future funding in a form of a policy, a car and drivers licence. Without these 4 things your child will not be able to get a job. Fact is every single job interview I ever had involved having your own transport as a must. Also teach your children to take NO! For an answer. Give them responsibly and base their allowance on their responsibilities. Also once 14 or younger, boy or girl makes sure they do a drug test once a year. Think it is extreme, trust me it is not. Make it a rule and not a trust thing. Truth is they are targets and you need to protect them.

How low can the police go! From Sunday to date we had 1 burglary a night and no police in sight! We report it to the police but no police presence! Not one police car driving around at night NOT ONE!

Can I take a moment to commend the police on taking a stand in Durban yesterday.
Two police officers were killed and another was wounded in a shootout with robbers in central Durban on Tuesday.

One of the robbers and an innocent truck driver - shot at the wheel, with his truck slamming into a roadside tree - were also killed in the exchange.

One gunman was still at large last night while three others were wounded and arrested.

Messy and tragic. But this has become a war. There will be casualties.

Let's respect and praise those who put themselves in the firing line to turn the tide.

War is perhaps the right word. However how did things get so bad so quickly? I actually wanted to join the police back when I couldn’t find work and before I got into the IT game. But I was never given the opportunity because of the new law at that time these included Affirmative Action, I wanted to join the military but it was also a no go aria at the time... So perhaps today we see a self inflicted infection thanks to job scarcity and stupid laws that really do not benefit anyone anymore but these laws are here to stay and thanks to illegal immigrants the infection will be out of control soon. You say war I say self-inflicted massacre.
