The municipalities should open communications between themselves and electrical contractors, it would make life a lot easier for everyone. Closing the dedicated contractor booths was a silly idea. I no longer assit customers with council requirements, I leave it for them to deal the long ques.

In most cases, I have noted that there is lack of trust between customers and municipalities. Installers add fire to the already strained relations.

Proper engagements amongst the 3 stakeholders may yield the best system designs that benefit mostly the customer.

Anyone had a meter inspection by Ethekwini electricity department or any other municipality ?

I hear they are now doing meter inspections if your electricity account is less than your normal average.

Anyone actually experienced this and have the facts with regards to the meter inspection and the outcome of the inspection ?

Did they fine you or threaten to disconnect your electricity?

From my understanding they dont have the resources or manpower to handle the SSEG registration process at this point in time, if anyone has facts please share.

Based on my meeting with Ethekwini Metro a week and a bit ago, any meters found running backwards are in for a right royal billing.

I cannot talk about Ethekwini but here in our valley, on the odd occasion, when I have found a meter "running backwards", the meter has been replaced free of charge by the municipality and the client billed for the units used.

Sometimes when a prepaid meter reaches zero units, instead of switching off, it starts adding units as they are being used ( faulty meter ). When this happens,it's easy to see how many units have been consumed without been paid for.

As far as I am aware, there is no penalty levied for the meter being faulty other than the consumer having to pay for the units used after the meter became faulty.

I have not yet come across a credit meter running backwards.

Dear Sir, I completely agree with you ...... what about all the other small guys that do a good job and work with qualified electricians .... this is becoming insane. I am in business for 20 years, probably need to close down now ...

I have been working in this industry as a hands on sparkie for 40 years, self employed for 33 of them, done a bit of elctrical work even changed a few plug tops

No need to close down, not much competition out there, IF I had to do a real crap job and feel bad about the quality of workmanship, it would still be better than 99 % of crap I see on a daily basis. Any fool can work in the electrical industry, we winning the race to the bottom.

My biggest concern is how much of the hook am I on when these systems need registration. It was unknown to me at the start and then with the forum I started seeing this term registration. I have emailed and asked and no answers. If the client comes now and says why didn't you tell me my honest answer is I didn't know or made aware.

Now if I need to do some single line diagrams then sure I can spare that time (money). But if I need to pay for an engineer I never knew I needed I may as well shut down...

Anyway hopefully some things align and I can leave the country and give a better future or at least give options for my daughter.

I don't do any solar work anymore. Pretty much because I tell the client that registration stuff might or is happening and I can not do it as I simply don't know how to. Also I charge a whack more than others. The others are generally not even electrical contractors which I worked my t*ts off for.

In Orania the council replaced all the old wheel meters with smart meters.
The council can now see how much power and when you fed power into the grid.
This also helps a lot with the billing where the feeding-back tariff applies.

Hi it looks like many of us are in the same boat ......we are in the business for 20 years (not 2) and I also want to give up - as the forums grow, so does the confusion - today I will attend an SANS training course, it is probably a waste of time ....
