Ethekwini SSEG registration

People expect to install PV , drop acounts to zero and still have the use of a Utility connection for when there are multiply overcast days or at night when the batteries cannot supply and all of a sudden the minisub that was hardly loaded is running at 120%
Somebody needs to pay to maintain minisubs, electrical cables feeding house , street lights etc .
If you dont want to pay the availabilty fee then have the utility remove your cable so that the capacity on the minisub can be used for other connections .Comment

That's better, some might say but you open yourslef up to all sorts of otehr crap, at least now I can read the content without having to try find it amongst the ads.Comments are my opinion, unless regulations are attached to support the comment. This is social media, not a court room.Comment

What is an example of a SSEG?
Solar PV is the main technology type used as an SSEG, but wind, biogas electricity, hydro power and diesel generators connected to the grid are also forms of SSEG.

So as you can see it is not just solar installations, and how did it come about that people need to install SSEG's, 2008 a thing called load shedding came about, which has since just got worse and worse.
2008 this problem started, its now 2023 and it's just getting worse (wait till the EV roll out begins) we think we had problems now.
The way I see it, you should not be punished for everything, adding a monthly fee to something you have installed to "keep the lights on and ease the burden on the grid (which couldnt handle the load and which is now got even worse because we have had to "make a plan" to keep the lights on, so hundreds of thosands of people have fitted bacttery backup system, which is the real burden, not he people installing solar, but the solar customers are going to pay the price.Comments are my opinion, unless regulations are attached to support the comment. All our systems are registered , all are happy that they took the advice and registered even small 2,5Kw of PV panels is working in his favor
Have you actually taken a system and worked it out with the tariffs , TOU, Feedback - We have been running our office since 2015 , first on 4 x 200AH gel battery's and now on 14KWH lithium - Even now through winter my account with availability charges etc sits below R 500.00 - Back in 2015 my prepaid electricity usage was at R500.00 per month - I have basically had the advantage of no increase in electricity costs in almost 8 years
The municipalities are going to all have tariff structures for PV - Study them and use them to your advantage
Eventually we will end up like the rest of the world and all domestic will be on TOU or " Live" tariffs .
South Africa is taking the information gained from Europe and using it here - It is not an SA thought up system.Comment

We dont have TOU tarrifs, yet (it might have changed since the 1 July 2023) the website tarrif increase has still not been updated, so there has been no benefit for domestic customers, the email address which is listed on the Website is incorrect and has not yet been updated.
I live in a different country to you lads down under, or so it seems, the last trip I took to the Cape it felt like I was in a different country when I crossed the border from KZN into the Cape. We have ques that go down the road, not just in the buildings. We dont have dedicated contractor counters anymore, as you can see even the ECA is going to battle to try get some form of correspondence going, imagine a small one man bussiness tryin to deal with them.
It is going to be interesting to see how this solar registration play out in places outside of the Cape.
By the way I have customers who have reduced their bills to under R1000 per month, I dont understand how a R 1200 additional fee is going to save them money, maybe you know something I dont.
It is narratives like this that take us hours of explaining to clients the advantages of registering the system , paying the availability fee , going onto Time of Use Tariff and benefit .

I have some really good news, with regards to the registration of your SSEG.
Copied from an email received.

I got the impression during discussions with municipalities down this way that the Electricity heads are all sitting around the same table , along the coast for definite , but further along the way as well
Once the amnesty period starts there is going to be a flurry of requests from people to get COC's and the balance of documentation.
Cape Town treat it as a tampering offence , and it would appear that that will be the way it is going to be handledComment

There is a lot more to this registration than people are aware, its going to become the next big money making racket, soon. This is going to be a good time to be a ECSA regsitered engineer who understands solar
Time to get ready and make sure all my ducks are in a row. As we have seen with the load shedding, desperate times, call for desperate measures. Prices are going to escalate through the roof. It looks like the banks are going to have to prepare for more credit, secondd bonds o nthe second already taken to fit the system...eeeeeish.
As for the people who thought they scored a luck with a cheap cheap or DIY installation, they are going to feel it the most. I doubt it is going to cost anything less than R15000.00, if you have a system installed by a legit licensed electrical contractor who understands the regs and has done the job as close to spec a possible.
Those hit and run installers are going to be nowhere to be found
SO 4 quadrent meters are going to be the thing to monitor, when they start flooding the market, best you ready for what is to come.
By the way, as I mentioned before, everything is being recorded and monitored on your system, right from the day it was installed. Take note of point 5
1. COC
2. Completed commissioning report (attached above)
3. Pr Eng/Pr Tech sign off letter for the installation
4. As built drawing if any changes were made to SLD submitted
5. View access to the PV generation portal
That seems to be the attitude that all the municipalities are going to take - There is a problem getting 4 Quadrant meters at the moment which is why they are not pushing.

You gotta ask yourself why this topic is not being covered my the media, (why East Coast Radio for example are not highling what is going to become as absolute shyte strom when it happens). they have been promoting solar and offering prizes, but nothing about the real challenge and how it is going to be dealt with once it happens.
I get the feeling that, they might scrap the red tape for the smaller units, 3.5/5 and maybe 8 kw units to deal with massive inrush of registrations.
Anyone have any stats of how many SSEGs installed in SA and how many are registered ?
Maybe I am just sucking air and they are just going to scrap SSEG registrations.
I am glad to see Deye are offering brand specific training, got a pile of documents yesterday, and they stock of the new Deye battery.Comments are my opinion, unless regulations are attached to support the comment. This is social media, not a court room.Comment

Dont say I didnt warn you, its looks like the public awareness roll out, started today, I am sure the amnesty will be next and then the tears are going to flow as the disconnections and fines begin as people scramble to find engineers and electricians. I just hope they have set aside anthing from R15000 to R50 000 to try get systems registered.
I get the feeling its going to get ugly,
To add to the fire, I noticed the rates boycott seems to have failed, people are getitng their electricity disconnected faster than they can say disconnect.Comments are my opinion, unless regulations are attached to support the comment. This is social media, not a court room.Comment

Here is the portal for online registrations of SSEG. http://apply.sseg.org.za/municipalities
A few munics are on there, but more are coming through.

Proper engagements amongst the 3 stakeholders may yield the best system designs that benefit mostly the customer.
