    Great music in the movies

I've titled this thread as great music in the movies rather than from the movies because sometimes the music was around first!

And to kick things off, a real "classic" in every sense of the word - the iconic opening to Rollerball with Toccata & Fugue in D minor by Johann Sebastian Bach.

The piece was originally written for organ, and the rendition used in the movie was easily the best available at the time (in my opinion anyway). I've heard others which were technically brilliant, but didn't quite manage to pull off the dramatic impact of this one.

But like any truly great piece of music, it has been reinterpreted more than a few times.

A great example which sticks to classical instruments would be the incredibly talented Vanessa-Mae with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra:

Classical instruments - yes, but with a very modern twist.

Finally, here's an example of a modern, electronic genre interpretation, the Electronica rendition by Galbatron:

All works of art in their own way, based on a classic that was brought back to fame in modern times by the futuristic movie Rollerball.

One’s got to admire how a movie maker takes a very specific scene of a movie and gives it even more meaning because of a popular song.

Heath Ledger passed away on 22 January 2008 from an overdose of tablets. He was an insomniac.

He didn’t plan to take his life, unfortunately he took too much of a prescription tablet. He died during the last movie production stage of the movie “The Dark Knight.”

Frankie Vallie: Can’t take my eyes off you:1967

Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You Lyrics

“You're just too good to be true
Can't take my eyes off of you
You'd be like heaven to touch
I wanna hold you so much
At long last love has arrived
And i thank god i'm alive
You're just too good to be true
Can't take my eyes off of you

Pardon the way that I stare
    There's nothing else to compare
The sight of you leaves me weak
There are no words left to speak
But if you feel like i feel
Please let me know that it's real
You're just too good to be true
Can't take my eyes off of you

I love you baby, if it's quite alright
I need you baby to warm the lonely nights
I love you baby, trust in me when I say
Oh pretty baby, don't let me down, I pray

Oh pretty baby, now that I've found you, stay
And let me love you, oh baby, let me love you...

You're just too good to be true
Can't take my eyes off of you
You'd be like heaven to touch
I wanna hold you so much
At long last love has arrived
And I thank god I'm alive
You're just too good to be true
Can't take my eyes off of you

I love you baby, if it's quite alright
I need you baby to warm the lonely nights
I love you baby, trust in me when I say
Oh pretty baby, don't let me down, I pray
Oh pretty baby, now that I've found you, stay
Oh pretty baby, trust in me when I say.”

The Sound of music: 1959: Movie sceneo Ray Mi, Maria and the children

“Let's start at the very beginning.
A very good place to start.
When you read you begin with ...

    GRETL
    A, B, C.

    MARIA
    When you sing you begin
    With do-re-mi.

    CHILDREN
    Do-re-mi?

    MARIA
    Do-re-mi.
The first three notes just happen to be
    Do-re-mi.

    CHILDREN
    Do-re-mi!

    MARIA
    Do-re-mi-fa-so-la-ti!.

(spoken) Oh, let's see if I can make it easier.
(sung) Doe, a deer, a female deer.
Ray, a drop of golden sun.
Me, a name I call myself.
Far, a long, long way to run.
    Sew, a needle pulling thread,
La, a note to follow sew,
Tea, a drink with jam and bread!
That will bring us back to do oh-oh-oh!

    GRETL
    Doe!

    MARIA
    A deer, a female deer.

    TWO CHILDREN
    Ray!

    MARIA
    A drop of golden sun.

    THREE CHILDREN
    Me!

    MARIA
    A name I call myself.

    FOUR CHILDREN
    Far!

    MARIA
A long, long way to run!

    ALL
    Sew, a needle pulling thread.
La, a note to follow so.
Tea, a drink with jam and bread.
And that will bring us back to doe!

    CHILDREN
    A deer, a female deer.
Ray, a drop of golden sun.
Me, a name I call myself,
Far, a long, long way to run!

    ALL
    Sew! A needle pulling thread.
La, a note to follow sew.
Tea, a drink with jam and bread!

    MARIA
That will bring us back to doe!
    Do-re-mi-fa-so-la-ti-do! So-do!

(spoken) Now, children, do-re-mi-fa-so and so on, are only the tools you use to build a song. Once you have these notes in your heads, you can sing a million diff'rent tunes by mixing them up. Like this:

(sung) So, do, la, fa, me, do, re.
    (spoken) Can you do that?

    CHILDREN
So, do, la, fa, me, do, re.

    MARIA
So, do, la, ti, do, re, do.

    CHILDREN
So, do, la, ti, do, re, do.

    MARIA
(spoken) Now, put it all together!

    ALL
(sung) So, do, la, fa, me, do, re.
So, do, la, ti, do, re, do!

    MARIA
    (spoken) Good!

    LOUISA
    But it doesn't mean anything!

    MARIA
    So we put in words.
    One word for every note.
    Like this:

(sung) When you know the notes to sing,
    You can sing most anything!

    ALL
Doe, a deer, a female deer.
Ray, a drop of golden sun.
Me, a name I call myself.
Far, a long, long way to run.
    Sew, a needle pulling thread,
La, a note to follow so,
Tea, a drink with jam and bread!
That will bring us back to do oh-oh-oh!
Do, re, mi, fa, so, la, ti, do
Do, si, la, so, fa, mi, re,
    Do-mi-mi-mi-so-so-re-fa-fa-la-ti-ti
    Do-mi-mi-mi-so-so-re-fa-fa-la-ti-ti
When you know the notes to sing
    You can sing most anything

Doe, a deer, a female deer.
Ray, a drop of golden sun.
Me, a name I call myself.
Far, a long, long way to run.
    Sew, a needle pulling thread,
La, a note to follow sew,
Tea, a drink with jam and bread!

That will bring us back to do oh-oh-oh!
Do, re, mi, fa, so, la, ti, do
    So, do, la, fa...
    Ti, doooooo...
    So, do!”

    “Revvin' up the engine
    Listen to her howlin' roar
    Metal under tension
Begging you to touch and go

    Highway to the danger zone
    Ride into the danger zone

    Heading into twilight
    Spreading out her wings tonight
She got you jumping off the deck
    And shoving into overdrive

    Highway to the danger zone
I'll take you right into the danger zone

They'll never say hello to you
Until you get it on the red line overload
You'll never know what you can do
Until you get it up as high as you can go

    Oh, yeah!

    Out along the edges
Is always where I burn to be
    The further on the edge
    The hotter the intensity

    Highway to the danger zone
Gonna take you right into the danger zone
    Highway to the danger zone
    Right into the danger zone

    Highway to the danger zone
    Right into the danger zone”

Dave, I like your choice of music to start the thread.

Good music will last forever. There is still good music and good musicians around, but in our instant gratification, fast moving world, DJ's do not bother to look for it and their ignorance is passed on to younger generations who sadly may never discover the fulfilling art, moods and nuances of quality music.
Excellence is not a skill; its an attitude...
