Hi Dave

It's still phpList for newsletters. I just use an HTML format, a custom template setting and some tracking options.
Other communications run directly from the vB software. It can be taylored somewhat with what you might have done with your personal settings, especially your default subscribe settings.
There are automated newsletter generators available for vB, but I personally don't like any of them.
I have suggested the development of a vB/phpList bridge application. But I don't know how far the coder who expressed interest in this has got with the idea.

ok, so do you manually copy & paste all the new threads into a mailing list, and send via phplist?
How do you manage subscriptions?
This is where the bridge would prove particularly useful.
I extract a mailing list from the Admin CP with every mailing and add this to a new list used just for that mail run. I don't include folks who have declined emails from Admin as that is the unsubscribe control. I also don't include unconfirmed registrations, thus effectively the list is the product of a double opt-in process which enables me to have my mail shots whitelisted in the event of spam filter issues.
Bounces and other problems are tracked via phpList. I monitor and appeal any issues that arise from filters, although the real key there is send rate and domain throttling. Then I update the vB status of any member based on their status in phpList after the mail run and all the fallout that goes with it is processed.
There is a mod at vB.org that will handle bounce issues and update membership status from vB generated maillings. But it simply does not have the options and control you get with phpList.
