I've always relied on the average-download-time-per-page graph in the googlebot crawl report. The trouble with page load times in SA is Telkom. Now how are we supposed to fix that?

I can't say I'm surprised.
First we have the speed when google crawls the site to index:
Not too bad - average speed of 322 milliseconds or about a third of a second.
Next we get the typical user experience (93% of us are from South Africa):
Now that is slow!
(although I'm going to keep an eye out for other vBulletin based sites which might publish these stats just to get some sort of platform benchmark before getting too wound up).
But then there are the following recommendations to speed things up...
Does anyone else feel the irony

The worst of it is I'm on a high speed connection and you can visibly see the page hanging waiting on Google to serve its little bits and pieces. If you read some of the comments in the link you gave, there are quite a few comments on the fact that Google's the handbrake too.

What tickled my irony meter is that this runs in firefox not google chrome!
Only stress when you can change the outcome!
