The first we knew the company had closed was when we called our contact person on his cellphone.
We'd been trying to call the factory for a few days to notify them of the day we would come round to service as per our contract. The phone just rang. No answer.
So today we called our contact person on his cellphone.
"It's closed. We were given no notice - just told the business was closed and good luck to you."
The irritation that no-one had bothered to let their contracts know they had closed passed pretty quickly. My first question at that point was where do I send the bill for the balance of my contract? But after a little research, I'm starting to wonder about a whole bunch of other stuff too.
It's an international company supplying parts to the automotive industry. Head office is in the UK and the company is "in administration" in the UK. It has a factory here in SA and one in Malaysia.
There - Now you know almost as much as I do.
I wonder:
- How much help is SA labour regulation going to be for the staff who have lost their jobs?
- Is the local operation in liquidation?
- Will it be wound up locally?
Or is the plan to walk out without even bothering to switch off the lights?
