Check your electricity bill! You could have been ripped off by the City of Joburg, which has reluctantly admitted that a "computer error" has led to thousands of consumers being overcharged on VAT.
But they claim the mistake is being rectified and that customers with overcharged accounts will be credited.
Steven Jones, who writes for investment and finance website Moneyweb, recently checked a relative's November bill from the City of Joburg.
He found that the total charge of R576,13 included VAT of R213,50. He said the net charge for electricity excluding VAT was R362,63 which means that VAT had been levied at a whopping 59 percent.
