So let's clear up a few things, now I am really showing off my old age.
You get old 16 mm split metal conduit, which would most likely have old VIR wiring, unless on a really, really, tight budget, remove completely and replace.
Then you get the old 20 mm black conduit, which would normally have a thread on the end of the pipe, unless you extend it with steel conduit and use a steel threaded coupling or adapter with the correct locknuts and bushes to maintain the earth continuity used in old systems with 2 wires, using the old metal lumex plug sand switches or the crabtree metal plug and cover, you going to need to make alternate earthing arrangements.
Then you get the galvanized steel conduit for coastal regions (within 20 km of the sea), as above applies.
I have found the best way to maintain the earth is to run a new earth wire, however, as we all know the budget controls everything, so you need to make a plan.
I have found that a piece of sandpaper, a bonding strap and a roofing screw and cold galv spray, will get the best results.
You sand the metal pipe to clean it and remove any paint or rust, wrap the copper bonding strap around the pipe , use an M5 brass nut washer and screw to secure the copper strap to the pipe, connect the earth wire to the new earth wire or another steel conduit using the same method ( not ideal, but a budget quick fix), then spray the strap with cold galv (if on the coast to prevent corrosion).
Then you take a piece of off cut wire, fit a lug and using the roofing screw to secure the lug to the old steel 4x4 or 4x2 box, then attach it to the earth terminal and check continuity.
DON'T REPLACE OLD METAL SOCKET OUTLETS WITH PLASTIC SOCKET OUTLETS AND ONLY CONNECT THE RED AND BLACK WIRE, JUST BECAUSE THERE IS NO EARTH WIRE DOESNT MEAN NO EARTH IS REQUIRED. IT MEANS THE OLD STEE LCONDUIT IS USED AS THE EARTH CONTUNUITY CONDUCTOR. (If you dont know this you shouldn't be working on electrical installation and at the same time, tell your boss he should spend less time playing at the toy shop and more time supervising his unskilled teams on site)
