    Tests report

    Hello : )

We replaced an oven and an extractor fan. The extractor that just goes under a cupboard type.

Anyway client wanted a CoC so I just did one and stated it was a replacement and no electrical point changes.

Then I was wondering can we not just issue a Test report ?

So my thinking is if we replace such items or even a light must we not just do a test report only as to check the circuit that we worked on only ? Also it them lets us check the Gris supply and see all is safe.

Are we allowed to just issue a Test report or must it be the whole CoC bit only ?

Must be coc and test report.

In your example, I issue coc and on the test report describe exactly what the coc is for and what it excludes.

DO you issue a COC/test report if you replace a ceiling fan or a light fitting?

If you are going to issue a COC if would have to be a supplimentary COC/test report (its one document)

The reason you cant issue a test report only, because on the COC, it has the number of additiional pages, you are not allowed to modify or add to the COC once issued, unless it is a supplimentary COC/test report.

The way I see it, if the customer is prepared to pay the extra for the time wasted, getting a copy of the original COC, then filling out a whole test report and supplimentary COC, then why not.

The more data documented about the electrical installation the better it is for everyone.

It could also create more work for you, if you identify the original COC is valid or not. You would have to do tests at the DB, if you find things that are non compliant, it means more work for you.

Once you have been in business long enough, you learn how to create enough work for those rainy days I have been preparing for the end of the month, I have about 3 months of work for what is happening at the moment in the solar industry. Also look at other stuff that makes a lot of money, the alarm CCTV and gates, people are prepared to pay more for a "technicain" (because they are way smarter than an elctrician. Just the batterry replacement part can make you a small fortune. Those days of R2000 alarm systems are long gone, its more llike R50 - R100 k for alarm, CCTV installation without the risk of the elctrical industry and the years of training and certification.

Just 10 wireless beams around the garden could net you R40 - 50 000 bucks, you have all the equipment and vehicles, 2 weeks of 3 day courses can make your team certified alarm installers, gate installers, solar installers and CCTV installer. The joke is they charge more than most electrical companies and it doesnt take 3 years to qualify.

Load shedding has created a gateway for technicains to replace batteries every 3-6 months, do the numbers and you will see there is more money in replacing batteries in gates and alarms than a small electrical company turns over in a month

If you offer the services of everything from the gate to the network cabling, you will never be looking for work again. The amount of work I generate per day could keep at least 3 teams on the road, thats why I am busy preparing for next week, there are going to be some massive upgrades in my (going o become "our") business.

Coc and test report are 2 seperate documents. The fact that they are printed back to back on one sheet does not make them one document.

Had an issue with an attorney last month who told me I'm not allowed to issue a coc for only a section of an installation. The part of the installation not covered by the coc was clearly described on the test report. He was wrong and admitted it.

The way I understand it, you have to attach a test report, which includes the visual check and the test results, once the test report is complete and the electrical installation is reasonably safe, you then issue the COC with the test report and all the relevant documents attached.

I have just done a COC/test report for the sale of a property ( I hate doing them).

I went to site carried out a viisual inspection, opened up everything, check the roof space and checked the earthing. Created a list of all the non compliant issues.

Returned to site the following day and did the work required to make the site reasonbly safe, did all the tests, once the test results were complete and I was happy with the results, I went around and labelled everything properly, took pics of everything, attached the list of the faults and the work we did on site to the test report, completed the COC and handed it to the customer with the bill.

YOu cant hand in a COC without a test report, just like you cant supply a test report without a COC.

If you issue the COC without a test report printed on the back of the COC, then you could just scrap the original test report and issue new test reports.

However if you didnt issue the original COC, then you cant change the test report because it has the singiunture of the person who filled out the COC.

    How it works:

The Original COC with an original test report on the back, which has a space for the additional pages and how many. You can add as many pages, which could include drawing, notes and what ever else you feel would make it easier for anyone who needs to work on the property.

Once the original COC is issued, any work dont on the site reuires a supplimentary COC with the test report and any addition pages.

The original COC is still valid , this myth that people say that if any other person works on site the original COC is no longer valid, its a myth.

If you install a solar system for example, you must make sure that there is a valid original COC, if you dont then your COC become the original COC. You can't issue a supplimantary COC if there is no original COC.

You definately cannot isse a test report without an original or supplimentary COC.

Right or wrong that is how we do it. After doing a refresher COC course I certianly wouldnt concern myslef with it not being correct, looking at the standard of certified electrians. I can see why you get qualified electrians for less tha a technician.

If I install a socket outlet, I issue either an initial coc or a supplementary coc together with a test report, depending on whether there is an existing coc or not.
If there's an existing coc, I issue a supplementary to the existing coc together with a test report for that socket outlet only.
If there's no existing coc, I issue an initial coc together with a test report for that socket outlet only.

Sections 3 and 4 on the test report caters for one to exclude certain parts of the installation and to describe fully only the part/parts covered by the coc, irrespective of whether it is an initial or supplementary coc.
