1phase booster pump

Hello : )

Got a client who has a JoJo system and booster pump. The booster pump I measured pulls 23amps to start. Then runs at 6Amps.

Now the issue, it was an existing backup system. A 3kw and lead acids.

We then added 6panels, a new 5kw growatt and a Dyness 5kwh lithium battery.

Now in laodshedding when the water taps go on the battery trips out. The battery has a max of 100A discharge (5000watts ) but now when the pump starts it pulls 5200ish amps.

So not everytine but most times it then trips the battery out as it cuts out.

So is there a way to make or use a soft start on a single phase motor to reduce start up current at all?

My apprenticeship time we didn't do very many motors at all and then trade test it was just the basics so I admit I do not know a lot on motors at all. Never had a chance really but alas that is how my cookie crumbled.

So if there is an item I can look at to reduce start up of the single phase please let me know or if there is any other trick to reduce start up.

Install a soft start that is designed for single phase pumps

Do not put a motor on an inverter without a softstart unless the inverter is rated at 8 to 10 times greater than the pump running amps and has no other load .

On the pumps that have the pressure flow control system you need to fit the soft start between the controller and pump as the controller cannot take the ramp up voltage/frequency from the soft start

You would need to connect the softstart between the controller and pump

Other option is to buy a Dab variable speed pump

A soft start is in the region of R2,5K

Softstart would definately work but they're expensive. Also look at an NTC as an option, similar to these

@justloadit I see a business opportunity here for you to produce some off the shelf items for inrush current limiting on pool pumps and wellpoints/borehole pumps etc...

We have 24 000 BTU aircon units (12 amps max) now plugged into a socket outlet on the essential supply, we use to install 4 mm wire with a dedicated isolator.

The new 24000 units come pre wired with 1.5 mm catyre and a plug top.

No more dimming/flickering the lights
