Alarms, gates and garage door remotes

It has always been a challenge to decide which remote to standardise for a property, do you use a 4 button or 6 button, do you use Nova, ET, IDS, Dace or 1 of the many other remotes available.

There is nothing worse than carrying a pile of remotes, one to open the gate, one to open the garage door and another to arm/disarm your alarm or switch off the electric fence.

To add to the challenge we have 403, 433 and 806 frequencies, which dont all work, even if they are 433.9 or something close.

24 VDC gates and garage doors add to challenge.

As you know I am a huge fan of supporting companies with good technical support, but even that is becoming a challenge.

Something that many people dont know, if you have a centurion gate at home and the office, you do know that you can use the same remote for home and the office ?

There is no need to carry bunch of remotes, you can fit remote receivers into any device and only use one type of remote.

Just beware because not all remote receivers can handle 12/24 VDC.

Another challenge, dealing with installation where the cameras and beams are all powered from the same power source, but the site has 3 different power supplies feeding parts of the CCTV system and the alarm system.

Power feeding feeds 3 cameras from 1 power supply and the garden beams 50 away from the power source, 3 months later they have all gone bang. No ground loop devices used, no bus isolator.

You think you have seen it all then you visit another site and man it gets worse.

    Alarm stuff is quite interesting.

May I ask please what a ground loop device is ? Not heard of that before and keen to find out more.

This one is used if there is interference on the camera.

This one we use, when the alarm equipment is supplied from a different power source to the main panel. In an outbuilding for example.

Ahhhhh that is interesting ! Very cool.

The ground loop thing is that like a magnet basically with the cable through it ? My old boss said something that a magnet with a the cable wrapped once would help with noise.

You are refering to "Chokes" or inductors to absorb very high frequency noise, which falls under EMI
