    Solar installation designs

We all understand that an IE or MIE registered with the DOL can issue COC for a solar installation.

Who can design a solar installation, an IE or an MIE or do you require an engineer?

IF an engineer is required, what level of engineer would be required?

    “Pr Eng” - (Professional Engineer)

“Pr Cert Eng” - (Professional Certificated Engineer)

“Pr Techni Eng” - (Professional Engineering Technician)

“Reg Eng Tech” - Registered Engineering Technician

    Very good topic !

Also I am sure most if not all domestic installs needs a civil engineer to make sure the roof can handle the weight of the panels...

I would assume that if you are allowed to install it and issue a COC, then the same person is allowed to design it. Is this not the same as most electrical installations ?

That is why I am asking the question, at what point do you need an engineer to be involved in the design process?

If the bylaws require an engineer to sign off the project, is that for all installations, or once you exceed a certain KVA/KW rating ?

As an IE or MIE, do you design the project and install, it then require an engineer to sign it off, if so why do you need an engineer to sign it off. I would think if an engineer is required, surely they would be required from the design phase?

I work in the industrial sector and in my experience it is the client that specifies that they require sign off by engineer. If they don't specify then there is no sign off. So more a policy / specification thing rather than a law / regulation. But I have always wondered ... maybe somebody else knows better.

And as for at what point the engineer gets involved ... well ideally from the beginning. But in reality I don't think anybody checks ... as long as there is a signature and a registration number next to it. Of course it is up to the engineer to do a proper check on what they are signing as they are taking responsibility.

To register your installation with the local municipality, an ECSA register electrical engineer is reuired. This is the case in our part of SA.

Best you find out the engineers reuirements, before yo start designing the system and ordering parts, otehrwise you could find yourself with a few challenges.
