Another advantage of being self employed, when there is little work/income, it is a lot easier financially to shut down the hatch and ride the storm, or do something else to supplement your income. Having employees creates another dynamic which drains you financially during these times.

Because I have to issue a couple of COC's, I decided to read the Annexure 1. One day someone might take this document and actually use it as a legal document.

    For the record:

    Declaration by registered person
a registered person, declare that I have personally carried out the inspection and testing of the electrical installation described in the
attached test report as per the requirements of:

    (Tick appropriate box)
    a) electrical installation regulations 9(2) (a) (new electrical installation); or
    b) electrical installation regulations 9(2) (b) (existing electrical installation); or
    c) electrical installation regulations 9(2) (c) (new part to existing installation)

and deem the installation to be reasonably safe when properly used.

I have entered the number of this Certificate on the attached test report(s)

I declare that the persons responsible for the design, specification, procurement, construction commissioning and inspection and test
have completed the relevant sections of the test report.

Getting test results from the Eleconop 1 you dropped off on site to carry out the electrical installation and test report, is not legal.

I do realise that we need to compete against everyone else doing the same thing, I just thought I would share this for those who haven't got around to actually reading the document the admin staff fill out for you to sign

The public who whine about bad electrical contractors and shoddy workmanship, but they the very people who are guilty of creating the mess the electrical industry faces at the moment.

YOU the user or lessor are responsible for the elctrical installation, not the elctrical contractor, so make sure you do the responsible thing and stop creating this dangerous environment.

Great thread - Dylboy nailed it "I tend to do inspection and maybe tests, send quote for repairs and then go have lunch and never hear from them but I made my bucks by making them pay first before I step foot on site...
When you tell someone there house they loved is not safe they don't like it, or saying you have to pay to get the house sold where they probably took a knock does not go well."

The satisfaction of doing a job with integrity is challenged by:-
    1) So many "add ons" to an installation - solar, inverter, backup batteries and my old favourite - a generator
    2) Clients who are economically stretched
    3) Clients who want a "quick fix" (just issue the flipping CoC!)
    4) Clients who don't see the benefit and won't pay for the extra time it takes to do the inspection thoroughly

End of the day someone else IS willing to compromise their integrity and market forces rule, resulting in dangerous and often lethal installations.

I should have stuck to IT...

  4. Thanks given for this post:

    Welcome to my world.

    You can add

    4) Clients who buy solar systems, then call you once they realise they need a COC, do the work them self or get some cardboard electrician to do the job, then think because they ask advice you will just issue a COC .

    Golden rule.

Do not issue a COC for any new works unless that work was carried out by yourself.

Now if only ALL IE's and MIE's stick to this, then you wouldn't get the bright spark handyman doing the work and hi's buddy signing it off for a couple hundred bucks.

    I suppose that's wishful thinking.

Agreed. These CoC things are nearly worthless...

What people I see do now is get the solar done, then get CoC when selling but say the "spark" who installed it didn't give me one and is gone.

So as the house is selling needs a CoC and we didn't build the hiuse but give a CoC same with solar, we didn't put it up but need to CoC it.

Anyways another issue I am experiencing is that I see a lot of stuff wrong, but I don't actually want to even do the work, it often will be a huge task and I am booked for the next month and beyond. Fixing other people's stuff is so time consuming. Maybe I'll change my perspective but for now seeing some of the work load on jobs I just don't quote hahaha.

Also I don't want to get bigger, heck not even big haha
