    Double insulated wire

A quick question, can you run double insulated wire directly on a wire cable tray AC or DC ?

why I ask the question is because I see a lot of solar installations with "exposed" (what is suppose to be double insulated) red and black wire.

Considering the DC from the solar panels are no longer "low voltage", some runs are over 400 VDC.

This discussion has come up in the past, but regarding "open" wiring.

The same rules would apply ?

I feel yes double insulated you can, as then that is the same as FTE. However not single insulated.

You can run single wire in a wireway
Obviously not good practice to run single insulated on cable tray

Dc must be in a separate wireway

If you can run single insulated wire on a cable tray why do some inspectors fail an installation if a short piece of wire is exposed on a downlight? Something to do with the compression on the single insulated wire.

Installing single insulated wire on a metal cable tray would be a silly thing to do, you would have to make sure the metal cable tray is bonded correctly. Just imagine pulling cable ties tight on a metal tray ... eeeish.

I see in the UK they only use double insulated open wiring from the meter to the DB.

Also with solar I am seeing in almost every single one that either AC and DC is in the same trunking or that DC comes through the trunking i.e cuts the AC cable perpendicular....

Look at every photo shown on social media aswell you will see that their is one trunking at the bottom with battery cables or PV cables in the same trunking...

It is going to take a few years for the solar industry to settle, its the same as problem we had with generators when load shedding started back in late 2007. That saying "it cant be that bad, everyone doing it".
