    In Short
The dangerous bit is when people take out the old 16amp socket you can touch the pins while extracting the plug top and kids can get all sorts of bits pushed into the plug openings - the smaller euro pins make it less likely to shove something in and the recessed portion stops fingers from touching the pins on extraction.

It was not an overnight decision and was discussed and debated by all role players within the industry

Before the regulation was adopted it was put out for public comment - Did you lodge objections at that stage ?
Then my question is simple, why have they not scrapped the old 16 amp socket, if it wasn't an overnight decision, and dangerous, why is every single appliance that I have come across (even visited Hirsch appliance sale) still supplied with an "old" 16 amp plug top?

Other than the extractor fan you mentioned, have you seen another appliances sold with a new za plug top?

No, I didnt get the memo, so unfortunately I didnt get to lodge an objection. That is why this forum is a handy platform for people to discuss or object these issues.

If I understand this correctly, you also agreed to the new reg or should I say didnt object ?

I believe there is a place for these ZA sockets, an example be at a table at a Wimpy or mug and bean, where you are busy with your laptop which is supplied with an "old" plug top and want to charge your phone. every single plug point on a property, I dont think so.

I was under the impression earth leakage units were installed to create a safer environment and the fact that one of the test requirements is to check the shutters on the 16 amp socket outlet.

Considering it was not an overnight decision, when will the rest of the country be required to supply appliances etc fitted with ZA plug tops ?

I would be interested to see a show of hands who agrees with the reg. on this forum ?

If you agree with the reg answer yes and if you dont and feel it should be part of the design or the customers choice answer no.

I mostly use CBi products. I like the idea of supporting local manufacturing. Is there any other brand that is produced in here locally?
