Tracing swa cable fault using cable thumper. On Sunday got a call that that clubhouse didn't have any power at all. Got there tested for power on single phase db no incoming power. New something was wrong with swa supply cable. I was told db board was upgraded 2 years ago and the clubhouse was build in 1955. I went to point of supply (with council electrician as the supply was coming from council board mounted on street pole about 200 meters away. Did insulation test no cable fault. Did continuity test red wire open curcuit. The council guy brought his trailer around and we connected the thumper between the 2 conductors and armouring and started injection 2kv dc into the cable took a walk around the premises but no luck. Took thumper up to 3kv dc again trying to trace or hear thumping nothing. At 4.5kv we traced the fault 80 meters from the clubhouse. Marked the spot where we heard the thumping and started digging. The live conductor was burnt clean through. Cut 500 mm away on each side of fault and joined the 16mm swa cable.Did insulation test perfect did continuity test all good. Connected point of supply and db board everything working perfectly. What a nice piece of equipment without the option of the thumper we would had to install a new cable. The swa cable was buried for 65 years without a problem until Sunday not bad go swa
