The photos were taken at around 20X magnification and the black bits aren't really visible to the naked eye.

The whole area is covered in residual flux and flux usually comes out of a syringe so it's clean, the black bits are something else entirely. Looking at the board they haven't reflowed using a hot air station so I'd guess it's a build up of burned crap that was on the soldering teezers or pencil iron they used. Maybe they scraped the shellac of the solder pads on the board using the iron or hot tweezers and that resulted in bits of blackened and burned varnish.

If it survives the testing regime I have planned for it and I end up keeping the tester I'll probably give the board an hour in the ultrasonic bath.

Just a note to let you know I haven't forgotten I promised to post some test results. I made some initial tests and all did not go well. I'm in the process of some further investigations which are taking longer than I anticipated.

Okay, a late update with this unit.

All didn't go well. The main reason I was interested in this particular tester was its ability to do 5Amp, 8Amp and 10Amp on-load tests. The tester I bought did none, or rather it did the tests and gave results with dubious accuracy but it didn't introduce a 5, 8 or 10 Amp load whilst it did them. I even tested it it using a high sample rate on an oscilloscope in case it was so fast it was outside the sample rate of my Fluke bench meter but alas nothing.

I returned the unit and exchanged it as faulty for another new one. The build quality of the new one was marginally better, it didn't have the black particulates on the board and considerably less residual flux but it still yielded exactly the same results.....or lack of results. I kinda lost interest at this point because I couldn't find any board-view schematics online and I don't have time to start from scratch reverse engineering the circuit to localise the problem(s).

This one was a bust unfortunately.

Thanks Andy. Was going to post a question on the build quality of Mastech … but I think you have covered that well. As you say I guess what you pay is what you get ...

I can't comment on many of their products but I've been hands on with serveral testers of theirs and Mastech wouldn't be a brand of choice for me. If I was looking for budget testers I'd go more for the Uni-T brand or even Toptronic which are usually rebadged Brymen testers.

I would stay far away from UNi T ... the equipment i have used would get the same rating as SA (junk) ...after returning a few faulty items( they dont last long)...they were returned to me in the same condition (not working) ...i have decided to dump the rubbish...maybe i have been using fluke too long...i still have all my original fluke testers...not one other brands has lasted past 5 years.

I also stay away from major tech brand... also budget plastic junk ...however they have branded products from kyoritsu under the major tech name ...kyoritsu i give a thumbs up...it is a quality brand...just look out for the K on the major tech units...thats how you can identify them...worth what you pay for them.

Agreed, Kyoritsu are a very solid brand, I have several of their testers and some of then are probably at least 20 years old and still in calibration.
