The hurdle with contacting previous employers is that the employer may not make any overtly negative comments about a past employee.
Only if you have a successfully prosecuted theft charge for example, can you mention that the person was discharged for theft.
Otherwise you have to be very circumspect when asking for, or for that matter, giving references.
You need to ask general questions and then read between the lines.
