With googles new move to mark all websites with our an SSL certificate (https) what is the cheapest and easiest option to get one?

Any hosting that uses cPanel can enable SSL certificates for free. Works like a charm.

Thanks Dave, I found the option in the cPanel and see I have a certificate shown - question how or can you get this certificate to show in the address bar with the https & lock?

Just use the https:// variant of the URL of the web page. As long as your page code is correct (i.e. only points to https resources) the page will be deemed secure by the browser.

If it isn't deemed secure, look at the source code for http addressed resources.

If you're using a CMS (such as Wordpress or Joomla), you may have to make specific set-up changes which will be script dependent.

Ssl 's are not all the same, what happens when you redirect as dave has mentioned is you make use of a ev certificate ( which is perfectly fine in most cases. ). I dont know dave if you were referring to the source code as going into your ide and looking for calls on non http resources but a easy way of doing it is using firefox console it will tell you exactly what resource and where the call is coming from. ( speeds up the process a bit. )

It's not absolutely necessary, but:
Google gives extra weight to sites using SSL (https) so it helps to have it for search results and
you have a contact form on your contact page - SSL makes it more difficult to intercept information, so you're protecting client's information entered on the page.

If youa e using a payent gateway and it redirects to a secure page like payfast or paypal it ok i guess. However most checkout pages require you to enter details before that, thats where the ino gets stolen I would never checkout from a non https site. Browsers are also starting to warn against it even if you arent selling, get ssl even if its a ev certificate it costs nothing, gooogle will rank you better for it ( least not penalize you ) and your user metrics will be better.

Well, since google has marked ssl cert as a ranking signal for a site in 2014, the entire web is being aggressively pushed from HTTP to HTTPS. And there are both free and paid options in the ssl cert space.
The most used free ssl cert is Let's Encrypt. which is easy and free to be added to a site via command lines, just make sure you find the right codes before installing, as the installation of LetsEncrypt in different Linux environment requires differet commands. Or you can utilize a hosting panel to make life easier: Install Lets Encrypt using cPanel
A free ssl cert is for a regular personal site without a trade or business involved, but not secure and enough for a professinal business site. Then you'll need a premium ssl cert which provide you with higher level of trust and validation, professional support and adequate warranties. The most used premium ssl cert on the block are RapidSSL and Namecheap. You can just follow the installation tutorial after payment, or make things easier to Install RapidSSL Using VPSrobot.
