    Unfortunately, while poorly done it is not illegal. The cables are not on hot water pipes and the joints are enclosed.

    No need for Twin and earth to run in conduit within the roof space

    The only thing I can see that's not compliant is the proximity of the conduit box to the lamp in the downlight but if it's LED even that isn't an issue. Maybe lack of strain relief for the connection in the conduit box but as already stated whilst it's an untidy installation it's not illegal.

    If there is a gland on the underside of the conduit box that provides adequate strain relief for the connections within the conduit box then I would say its compliant.
    If there is no gland however I would fail it.

    Something else is that there is more than one cable in some of the glands. I read a long time ago in the regs, and now I cannot find it, that each piece of equipment must be utilised as It was originally intended. I am sure that this means there should only be one cable per gland

    You could go one stage further and fail glands with a stuffing rubber that has a round hole when there's a flat twin cable going through it because officially you should use one of these with an oval shaped hole;

    I see where you're coming from but I'm not usually quite that pedantic to be honest, if there's a gland or an alternative entry system and it's maintaining the IP level and providing reasonable strain relief I wouldn't fail it.

    The only thing wrong in the pic, the twin and earth is running on top on the beams. The twin+e is not protected on the beams, any person working in the roof space could damage the wire and expose the live conductors. I am sure you could find a clause in the SANS if you really looked and interpreted it a way to point this out. What you would then do with the info is the part that makes me laugh at this industry. It is like trying to tell a taxi boss his body guards are not allowed to carry full automatic weapons like and AK 47. I dare you to waste the time and energy.

    Evening all

    The cables in question should be fixed at the ends to prevent strain as per the regulation 6.4.3.4
