A vague recollection was it being a "number" (or concept) on it own. So basically the square root of -1 = square root of -1.
Its simply given the symbol "i".
So "i" represents the square root of minus one.

The sqaure root of -1 is actually 1(i) the (i) shows us that it is a complex number. such that (i)=-1
Square roots of negative numbers are beyond the range of real numbers hence we use complex numbers which have (i) as part of its form.
e.g sqaure root of 9 = 3 as 3*3 = 9
square root of -9 = 3 as 3 * 3 * (i) where (i) = -1
