5.4.2 Zone 1 locations
The following shall be classified as zone 1 locations:
a) the interior of a spray room and spray booth that, except for fresh-air intakes and exhaust outlets, can
be closed off completely;
b) the interior of an open spray cupboard;
c) the space (excluding parts of it that are cut off by walls that have no openings other than fresh-air
intakes and exhaust outlets) that extends from floor level to a height of 450 mm above the intended
maximum height of a wet finish, or to a height which the flammable substance can normally attain or
can accidentally attain, for example by upward spraying with a spray gun, and that is within a
horizontal distance of 6 m of any of the following:
1) an open spray cupboard;
2) an area where a spraying operation (other than touch-up spraying) is carried out, but not in a
closed spray room or closed spray booth; and
3) a dip tank and its drain board(s);
d) the entire space inside an exhaust duct; and
e) the space that is within a sphere of radius 6 m and that has as its centre the outlet of an exhaust duct
5.4.3 Zone 2 locations
In the case of a spray room or a spray booth that has openings other than fresh-air intakes and exhaust
outlets and that has spraying equipment that can operate when these openings are not completely
closed, the following shall be classified as zone 2 locations:
a) in the case of a spray booth, all space that is within a horizontal distance of 6 m of the openings in the
spray booth (with the same vertical requirements as in 5.4.2); and
b) in the case of a spray room, that space that is within the spray room but that is not classified as a
zone 1 location.
