Ok think about this how many of Eskom's VIP's are qualified electricians, operators and so on and so forth?
Yes my point exactly. That is why we have rolling blackouts, f*all electricity and f*all plan to fix the problem (They have a plan to take lots of our money and buy new Merc's for themselves though)

Ok here is the scenario for you. You own a shop your manager proofed to be less then worthy and his staff backed him up all the time. You need to clean house because your customers lost their trust in your shop's name.

Now do you use the existing staff knowing that they backed up the manager? Or do get a new manager with no connections to the existing staff?

Obviously the new person well not have the experience of your staff or your old manager but you will look for someone with a good background in hope to restore your customer's confidence.

Aye well, I'll get a manager with retail experience and not a social worker. I can just imagine the Pick n Pay on the corner employ a social worker to manage the branch...not.

Well we can argue about this until the sky collapse… Potential is sometimes overshadowed by qualification. I hope this is one such case. Sometimes a special set of circumstances demands an unorthodox approach.

Ja ja, we need a police chief who knows squat about policing, come to think of it, we already have a state president who has a standard 2....fitting I suppose to have a chief of police who is also a qualified baby sitter.

Life as a cynic is easy criticising everything more so. I am not saying everything will work out just dandy but I am saying is time will tell.

    Lol
tec0 -- only a real sheep would believe that. In any event the job is not just administration. You are not a "General' in order to just administrate???!!!

tec0 - -with respect, you seem to have missed the whole point of the thread. Whatever the criteria that our bright spark Pressy wanted to set for the post --- the right to equality dictates that you run a fair, open and transparent process of selection ... for everyone that imagines they meet that criteria.
Otherwise you are creating a situation where others are "more equal than others".

On point adranh. And I have referenced Animal Farm. We can include "Funny Farm" when you consider the lady is now a "General", not having even learnt to march, hold a rifle, drill, polish boots, blanco a belt ... Don't know whether to laugh or cry... The Peter Principle needs this as an update.

I think that Animal Farm is a perfect representation of the country. The thing that I find most facinating about the book is how when the rules are rewritten it is just accepted as always having been the way they are now. The other thing is how the pigs eventually look no different to the men. The problem with the Peter Principle in this case is that it is not applied in a rung by rung fashion, it is applied in huge leaps (from zero to hero overnight) This short circuited Peter Principle should be referred to as the Cadre Principle. I am at a total loss to understand how totally unqualified people are put into positions of power. When I speak with my brother with all his degrees and experience his intelligence and suitability for law and finance is obvious, there are many such people (black and white) who have attained great wisdom through education and experience, yet the ANC totally disregards those people simply to put their incompetent friends in positions where they are able to enrich themselves. What the goverment should do is this: They should look at all thier buddies and decide how much cash it would take to make them happy, then give them each a lump sum and say thank you for your service and you are now free to sit on your farm and herd sheep or drive your Merc or do whatever it takes to keep you away from government. Then they should go ahead and use appropriately skilled people to do the real work.
