Murdock, we bought 2 of these monitors in December 2010 and both have the same issue you have mentioned. This developed just after the warranty period came to an end
As for overcoming the issue, I attached a second monitor (LG this time). I doubt I would be in a hurry to buy a Samsung monitor again...

I've got a few Samsung Syncmaster monitors - not a problem I've noticed, but perhaps I haven't opened a screen with a black background![]()

I've got a 2232GW here right now. It's around 4 years old and doesn't have this problem. I've got a larger Samsung (2333TN) at home and have seen this issue there, but it was a setting: some sort of "automatic brightness control". Can't remember exactly what it was called. At first I got really upset as the whole screen would dim or lighten every time I opened another window ... until I found the setting and turned of the auto-adjustment.
IMO it's one of those "trying to be too clever for their shoes" ideas.

I was very surprised to see this thread.
I swear by Samsung monitors and televisions. Never seen a problem with them in my life.
As irneb pointed out, it may be some sort of automatic brightness control feature. Play around.![]()

thanks...what would i do with all you bright sparks...screen fixed no need to change to LG
you just click on the buttons on the right bottom...go to picture...then to magic bright and change it to anything but dynamic contrast and bingo good as new.
Glad you got yours fixed Murdock, mine has always been set on magic bright and any amount of playing has unfortunately not resolved the issue. Bad batch perhaps? We bought them both on the same day from the same place. Ah well![]()

kim you must enter magic bright and change the setting from dynamic contrast...to movie or anything else...it should over come the problem..mine screen almost faded out completely until i changed it.
if you need to test your screen go check out this website isetech.co.za it has a black backround.
