My wife has expressed a keen interest in becoming an electrician. I notice many different avenues / specialties in this field. Where and how could she get started, and where would that lead?

women is the electrician field is rare ... though a nice occupation
the electrical field is big, so not sure what she wants to do ?
but i think the best is to get an apprenticeship from a company.
not sure if the artisan contracts is still the same. it might be.
an electrical (or fitter or turner) apprentice signs a 4 year contract, meaning they must qualify in that 4 years.
usually you can qualify(trade test) in 2 and a half years.
helpful info here : http://www.merseta.org.za/
merseta is the governing body for training (artisan)
you can do it yourself by going to technical colleges , and get a minimum n3 in electrical . not sure what nqf level is needed.
but then you need 80+ weeks practical experience.
there is threads on the forum for how to get a wiremans license and master electrician license. though not so easy to get.
hope some of the info helps ...
