    There is another problem with having the electric motor in the hub, which one may not immediately think of, and that is that the suspension has to be really beefed up to compensate for the extra weight in the wheel. It also has a problem with balancing the wheel at high speeds. The trains do not have to contend with pot holes and bumpy roads, and trucks do not have to contend with the high speed.

    Of course they don't necessarily need to have the motor inside the wheel hub. It could be connected with something similar to a CV joint drive shaft as you get in front-wheel driven cars. It's still a lot less mechanics than the entire gearbox & clutch arrangement.
