Haloween is an American thing. A number of retailers are trying to push this down our throats in order to boost sales. They have also "invented" some other days, such as wear- your-pants-upside-down day etc. Hardly a week goes by without some promotion in a shopping mall. The over commercialisation of Valentines day, Mothers day, Fathers day and others are good examples.

Even holy days such as Easter and Christmas are so commercialised that it has lost its true meaning. Christmas is only on the 25th of December, but the shops are already displaying merchandise and Christmas trinkets.

I agree that promotions have to be done to keep consumers interested, but sometimes they just lack imagination and go overboard on this special day thing.
Excellence is not a skill; its an attitude...

It may neighbourhood, we have been celebrating Halloween for many years. It's a community building event. The kids start in one of our 4 parks for a fancy dress competition, face painting, etc. They get a trick or treat map with participating homes marked on it. An small fee is charged and the funds are used for the upkeep of our parks. We put banners, etc up outside our homes if the kids are welcome. Kids, parents and even the dogs dress up. Our streets are packed with people. The event is so popular it attracts people from neighbouring communities. The costumes are amazing. It's really wonderful to stand in my front yard and see throngs of fancy dressed people walking up and down the street. I run out of sweets every year. I catch up with my neighbours and spend an evening celebrating my awesome suburb.
