Water Evaporation in Durban

OK. Looking for the Durban forum members to give me some indication of how fast water in a pool would evaporate, in Durban, in the windy conditions we've had for the last week or so.

My pool size is about 8 x 4 meters, quite exposed on the edge of a windy hill, and I have noticed the water level drop by about 2 inches in about the last 8 days.

Is this normal, or should I be suspecting a leak ?

Sounds possible for evaporation to be 10mm a day. Is your pool covered? Is it heated? Does it have any fancy schmancy cascading water feature elements.

Wonder why the spell checker didn't didn't get its panties twisted with the word 'schmancy'?

It's been a while since I've had a pool - but yes, a pool at this time of year tends to need more topping up than most of the rest of the year. A combination of warmer weather, wind, low humidity and no rain. Losing a tile a week was not unusual (about 3cm).

Not covered or heated, and no fancy water flow. We do live on the edge of a hill so get quite a bit of wind coming up the valley from the lagoon.

I would speak to a few of your neighbours and do a comparison. It shouldn't matter on the dimensions of your pool, the loss of water as a depth over time should always be the same no matter what the pool size.

I would also wait a while before looking for leaks as it doesn't sound excessive to me.

Update : since we had that very hot day on Tuesday, 4 cracks have become visible around the deep end of the pool - maybe they were just hairline before and the warmer days have dried out the ground a bit more and the pool sides taking a bit more stress.

Insurance assessor is coming in the morning.

Have spoken to the previous owner and this pool ( fiberglass ) is about 25 years old.

Will update after the assessment.
