    Portable fridge/freezer wanted

In two week's time we will be traveling to the Kgalagadi Transfrontier National Park for a one week camping holiday.

Does anyone have a portable fridge/freezer (the type that can be powered from your car cigarette lighter and the mains) that we can borrow or buy at a good second-hand price? We've looked at the prices of new units and they are very expensive - nothing cheaper than R6k!

12V fridges/Freezers are expensive, as the compressor must be 12V, and they are not really high volume production, maybe an absorption refrigerator may be cheaper, not as fast to get going but cheaper though. They also can work on 12V D.C., 220V AC and LP gas.

If you just want to run it electric, not on gas, you may be using wrong search terms. Those things are called electric / thermoelectric cooler boxes and can be had well below R6k.

I have one similar to this: https://www.makro.co.za/sports-and-o...ooler-231531EA and it works well enough. Don't expect wonders though, IMO those are primarily good for keeping stuff that is already pre-cooled cool a good while longer than unassisted cooler boxes. If you toss in a few warm bottles of whatever into the empty box the cooling element will take its sweet time getting those temps down.

Those peltier refrigeration units will only achieve an internal temperature that's so many degrees lower than the external temp. They're more like a glorified cooler box.

More like 5 - 7 degrees below ambient, depending on the starting temperature of the insides.
