    COW SLAUGHTERED ON SIDEWALK???????

A cow was slaughtered on a sidewalk in an upmarket suburb in East London, Eastern Cape yesterday evening. Is that "Culture, Tradition or Cruelty"? You be the judge!

Do you think that slaughtering a cow on a street sidewalk is correct? Aren't there laws describing the slaughtering of livestock? How do you think the cow was slaughtered on a pavement next to a street used by many?

We are both from that "apartheid" era. Those "slaughters" were done at the kraal of the tribe and not in a busy street for all to see. I thought then and still do, that it was cruel to slaughter a cow in that manner. I have my own opinion about religion and tradition and not to offend anyone, I wont voice my comments on this forum, just yet.

No, I was not aware of this, as the areas I lived in Peddie (Ciskei) & EL, these rituals took place at the various kraals AND my father in Law was the Chief Health Inspector over the Eastern Cape and he only once received a request for a ritual slaughter at a house and NOT in the suburb streets. I don't know if you have witnessed a slaughter in the streets?

Yep plenty on the streets and they weren't all cows. If u did not know about them then u need only listen to the truth commission. In fact de Kock is trying to get out of jail as we speak ...... Google his name and you might just realize what he did ...... On the streets. Do you not remember that if you were an activist in those days you "disappeared". So in my mind that was far worse than a cow in East London.

Then the sidewalk part of the OP question becomes irrelevant.

Let's not beat around the bush - this is about culture and tradition.

Assuming that private property was available as an option, my question to the slaughterers would be "why was it slaughtered on the sidewalk?"
Best I know, that the slaughter occurs on public property is certainly not a cultural requirement...

Thanks Dave for "explaining" the original comment, I don't think that in our present day society this should happen. There are laws that govern the slaughtering of livestock, this act of slaughtering a cow on a sidewalk should not have taken place. I know that suburban people who, when they've purchased livestock for consumption, they have it taken to an abattoir where the slaughtering can be done in an humane and controlled way..

Cruelty to some people, is when a motor vehicle is involved in an accident and people start chopping pieces off the animals while they are still alive as what happened in Ixopo
