Laser engraving a door stop dome

The company that manufactures these door stop domes asked me on Friday to look into engraving onto them. It took a bit of lateral thinking to work out how to do it because the laser head is fixed to the gantry and the tip of the head has to be a constant 5mm above the job...

I spent the day designing and making a tool to solve the problem and it works like a charm. The first one was perfect and so was every single one afterwards. I finished farming with that lot about 10 minutes ago and I'm going to award myself a Noddy badge and watch a movie.

And if you continued to think laterally so that the tip continued to go around the sphere, you would have ended up at the beginning?

I just grabbed random images to do the testing. The horse is nice, you should see it in colour. Look for Fire Horse in Google Images.
