    Tax Year Date Adjustment

    Hi everyone,

I work offshore in EU and most years spend enough days out of the country (183 & 60) to receive all of my tax money back.
In 2017, I however did not spend enough days out of the country due to a lack of work, but spent quite a few days out in Nov & Dec.

What I'd like to do is back-date my tax year to the beginning of Nov 2017, which would mean my tax year ends end of Oct 2018. My tax guy has never heard of this situation. I have heard this is possible, would anyone know where I could start?

I have attached a spreadsheet to explain a little better.

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Hi

The exemption provided under section 10(1)(o)(ii) used to apply in respect of services rendered outside South Africa for or on behalf of any employer, as long as the individual is outside South Africa for a period or periods exceeding 183 full days, during any 12 month period commencing or ending during a tax year. That's how it used to be and I am not aware that it has changed.

I can understand why you have worded it "back dating", but it really applied only to the days worked requirement, because that period can span two tax years.
