    [Question] SARS Refund

On Thursday last week I got a letter of completion from SARS, on Friday Morning my Statement of account saying i'm due a refund and I check i'm not selected for audit or verification. When can i expect the refund in my account?

I received those mails as well.
Then I realised, like Zuma, SARS never pays back the money.

What is the payment date on the statement? Request a statement again today. If no payment date, they have 21 business days to allocate a refund date.

We eventually bit the bullet and went into SARS to find out about the refund. After about a one and a half hour wait we were seen by a very pleasant and helpful lady. She did a bit of searching and then found that a 2009 return had not been submitted and that there would be no release of funds until that happened.

This was news to us as my wife was earning under the threshold until 2010 when she then registered for tax and began submitting.

There was also no mention of any outstanding return at the bottom of the Statement which we requested on e-filing.

We were advised to submit the return online and the payment should be released. We were also told that if we could not find the IRP5 issued for that year we would have to return to SARS with an affidavit saying that it had been destroyed as it was more than 5 years old.

Well we did some digging around at home, found the relevant IRP5 and made the submission which was a zero return.

Lo and behold, the money was released and appeared in my wife's account 4 days later.
