    [Question] Medical expenses

I am not a member of a medical aid but have had medical expenses of over R20 000 which I had to pay. How will this affect me with the new tax credits for the 2013 tax year. Will I be able to claim this amount on my tax return and if so how do I fill in the medical section. Thanks

    Hello Karen,
The medical tax credits would not apply to you, as it only apply to people contributing towards a medical aid.
You would however be able to claim on your income tax return the amounts paid, provided that you have slips to prove it and it was for legit medical expenses (i.e. you have scripts for the medicines) and registered health practitioner invoices.
    Hope you get something back!

      Karen,

Please note that there will be a limit on the deductability of the medical expenses. The calculation works as follows:

      Expenses incurred: 20000
Less 7,5 % of taxable income before deduction xxx
      Amount allowable 20000-xxx

So if your taxable income before the deduction is R266666.66 or more, you will not get a deduction.
