    New importer and VAT registration

Hi there, We have recently changed our core business from being a service provider to importing goods. It's been one helluva learning curve so far, but we have just successfully landed or first shipment with a lot of help from our agent. We are having problems with VAT registration. We were previously VAT registered but as we didn't earn enough to pay/charge VAT our account has been suspended. I am trying to have are VAT number reactivated, but it seems that SARS is just as strict as if it was a new application. We are in no position to prove income at present, but have just paid an enormous amount of VAT to land our goods. My question is how do I recoup the VAT paid if I can't charge VAT? How will this effect VAT registered vendors that we supply to?
    Any input would help. Thanks

May I move this to the tax forum? There's a better chance of a meaningful response.
