    [Question] Working retrenchment notice period

    Good day,

I have been retrenched and would just like to know if I have to work the notice period.

I have received documentation etc to finalise the process, but the employer is expecting me to stay on during the notice period for 'operational requirements'.

Are there any consequences if I choose to stay away?

Yes. They could dismiss you for desertion or AWOl.
That would mean no severance etc.
If you wish to attend interviews they should accommodate you.

I know it can be emotional - but keep teh bridge intact, work harder than ever.
