I have been at my company for 16 years as a receptionist. I have become a very efficient all rounder. A month ago our accounts assistant retired. I was offered his duties that would be added to my existing portfolio for a R2000 increase. I stated that the offer was not feasible for added duties. They asked what I would consider feasible and I said R6000 increase. They came back to me saying that the responsibilities will be split among the branches and the manager himself is handling the remainder of duties. Now according to HR, the company is looking for a new accounts assistant. Is this right? Can they do that without even negotiating a package with me? Do I have any ground to stand on and take this up?
Offered the job but hiring someone else

Yes they can. You turned down their offer when they offered you R2000 increase. Unfortunately you asked for too much and now they are looking elsewhere.

The company expected me to continue carrying out my reception duties plus take on the accounts assistant duties but only increase my salary by R2000. The accounts assistant was earning far more than my asking salary of taking on both the roles. I also did not turn the offer down. I asked for a R6000 increase and thereafter was told the duties were going to be split. And now they want to hire someone else and pay that person even more than my asking salary. I just don't see the sense.Comment

As a business owner myself it is their prerogative to hire from outside or from within. There is no law to say that they have to give you the job. More and more companies or combining jobs i.e. getting one person to do two jobs. I do personally think that your asking R6000 more is too much and would also hire another person perhaps for slightly more but then they concentrate only on accounts.Comment
