Hi there. I need some advice. I had a problem where I could not go to work as I did not have anyone to look after my children. I sent my boss an email to tell her about this. She immediately forwarded my email to the recruitment agent that placed me there 8 months ago. I finally managed to find someone to take care of my kids and phoned my boss to let her know. My boss was really angry and told me it is not her problem if I don't have a baby sitter. I do understand this. Now I am afraid to return to work as this woman can be really mean. I know she is going to make my life difficult at work, I have seen her do this with staff she doesn't like. Can I resign with immediate effect?

I agree with Dave - you cannot just run. Im sure there is more to the story i.e. how long were you off for, was you boss able to contact you on your cell etc ?
It def does not look good on your cv when applying for another job at a future date and if you leave it off, then gaps don't look good either !Comment

Hi there. I was off for 3 days. I am not sure what my contract says as I don't have a copy. I originally signed a 3 month contract.Comment

Technically, probably not. Per Dave's post, most employment contracts include some sort of notice requirement.
Practically, most employers don't bother enforcing these notice requirements because it isn't worth the effort.

I am really terrified of this woman as she is verbally abusive. What would the consequences be if I resigned with immediate effectComment

Go back to work and record the conversation that she has with you. The more abusive the better. Take her to the CCMA and play the recording. Anyway, what more an she do that flap her wings and make a lot of noise, she can't kill you or hurt you physically...say after me "Sticks and stones can break my bones but a nasty old twat like you can't hurt me"Comment

Your fear of the employer does indicate the possibility of a claim for constructive dismissal, but in order to open the door to that road, you do have to attempt to resolve the problem first - which would mean facing your fear...
