    Taking back the industry

About time. Lets see how effective they are.

There is huge money for them. It can be the only reason i can think of why they would want to taking back the industry. Lots of mandelas, hence the reason the DOL have past the buck once again. Nothing in it for the DOL , tried the private contractor which back fired. Lets see were this goes.

The NBCEISA is on a drive to deploy more inspectors to identify "pirate" contractors and either enforce the collective agreement if they are properly qualified and appropriately registered, or issue cease and desist orders if they are not...

Why not just reinstate the onbudsman with all his powers? It used to be great, it hardly ever went to court. The client phoned him up, he did his inspection and called a on site meeting with the contractor. The evidence and regulations determined the course of action. Withing days the contractor had to fix his mess at his expense or face steep fines or jail time. Worked like a charm. The CPA does not come close and neither will these guys. A man on the ground in the thick of things with the clout to close the chancers down makes short work of them very quickly. A jack of all trades gets his ass behind bars or a stiff enough fine to stop him thinking about doing it again. All within 21 days. Bring back the good old days, they don't have that name for nothing.

I would be interested to know how much is in it for the NBCEIA, It must be a substantial figue to get them motivated.

I think it is a great idea, just dont think the DOL passing the buck once again is the way to go about it.

^^^ Exactly what Sparks says. The key things that made the ombudsman work was that he had powers, and he was hands-on with a no-nonsense approach. Also had had no vested interest other than the regulations book.

Also, thinking about it, since when was this part of the NBCEI's mandate?

It isn't. At least when it comes to enforcing standards.

The NBCEI's mandate is to enforce all aspects of the collective agreement - which does give a fair amount of scope.

So if you are a "working employer" or any of the others you shall not observe the terms of this agreement and are excluded?

The working employer, his assistant and the lady who works in the office . So if you are a one man business with only one employee and a woman who works in your office you are excluded? That excludes a lot of small electrical contractors and sub contractors.

Which means that all the one-man-band outfits are exempt anyway. Surely this is where much of the problem lies with the quality of work of these kind of contractors. Also it does nothing to stop plumbers installing electrics for geysers, security companies botching a supply for their alarm panel, DSTV installers not earthing their antenna poles, handymen installing the gate supply....I could go on....

Yeah, this was kinda where I was heading with my comment.

                          Taking back the industry

Andy are saying i do kak jobs? Be Careful there are a lot of one man band outfit on this forum. I would employ the services of a man operation any day rather than a big company which sends a person who is watching the clock for tea time lunch time and 4 pm.

I do believe its not us one man bands causing the problem in the industry, more the big companies using unskilled staff to perform skilled tasks with the cheapest rubbish equipment money can buy, because they dont want to waste money on good stuff because the staff just f..... It up or steal it. Being on site everyday i see the problems first hand.

It is the big companies who are registered causing crap workmanship problems on site.

A good example is a hospital which was built recently, the company was instructed to use inspectors not employed by the contractor on site, because of their bad reputation. Man was that an eye opener. When i found 2 way light switching connected via plug circuits, yeah believe it or not, i started asking question. All i am going to say is...no comment.

However i do agree with you about the plumbers, dstv installers etc.

The only way they are going to sort out the problems in the industry is to have people who are employed by the relevant department in the DOL suitably qualified with years of experience who dont take bribes.

The problem is not with competent one man contractors Ian, it is with the unqualified one man operations. They are the ones who don't know there is a difference between the two neutral bars, they are the ones using the earth wire as a return for an extra light fitting, they are the ones who do not know the difference between an isolator and a lightswitch.....
