Can anybody please tell me how I can get Google Adsense to put ads that are more relevant on my site? My focus is on the SA market and most visitors are from SA. Ads relevant to my field appear on the site, but a lot of the ads are targeting the overseas market. What is the reason for this? Are there perhaps not enough advertisers in SA?
As long as you are getting ads that are spot on topic, I wouldn't worry too much in terms of Google understanding what your page is about.
From there, advertising is a funny thing. If you have a website that sells burgers, should all the ads be selling burgers? Maybe the odd hot dog advert wouldn't hurt.
As a publisher, I personally have faith that Google understands which adverts will convert better than I do. After all, they have far more information at hand to make those decisions - not only what works on my site, but also what has (and has not) worked for the visitor and advertiser as well.
There might be a local stock shortage if your niche is very narrow, but Google is pretty smart at finding viable filler alternatives.
Frankly, it comes down to traffic. If a particular page of your site gets more traffic than other pages you will notice 2 things...
1. That page's ads will be better targeted and...
2. Google will place higher-paying ads on that page
You can test this very easily. Pick a page and then refresh it. Wait for it to load. Compare the ads to the previous ones. Repeat up to 10 times. Somewhere between the first refresh and the 10th one, you will notice better-targeted ads and, eventually, an ad that takes up the whole space.
Google is very smart and only spends resources where it pays them to spend those resources. So it all comes back to your value offer and getting traffic. If your value offer is great, you should get decent traffic which will improve your ad-revenue exponentially.
I've tested this extensively on FreeArticles.co.za. When traffic is low, ad-earnings do NOT drop on a scale relative to the drop in traffic. It's a HUGE drop and the same is true when we have a traffic peak.
Hope this helps
