Is This Legal - Road Side Advertising

I'm curious here, how do some businesses just put up banners road side and posters, including signs etc.

Is it legal or do you need some permission from the council and also pay them?

    It depends
If it is your place, you can do what your want.
Otherwise, I think you have to pay or need some permission

I think it may depend on the Municipality. In one town I know, for example, you can rent advertising space on the lampposts - and special frames have been made and attached to a series of lampposts.

If you are wanting to show directions for a special event, or advertise that event, permission needs to be granted from the Municipality. It was usually for a limited time period and a small sticker applied to the poster. Should you not take the poster down after that time period you would be fined.

No posters could be put on traffic signs or information signs.

Generally you can advertise on your own property at no cost, but even then there are certain rules to avoid them becoming a hazard or distraction to traffic.

I am speaking from some years back now, so not too sure of the latest rulings.

The authority channel is dependant on who owns/is responsible for the road from which the signage is viewable.
Municipal road - It'll be the municipal by-laws.
        Regional Road - Provincial Legislation.
National Road - The National Roads Agency.
        Participation is voluntary.

Thought I could implement something like this but it does seem pricey for a newbie to start doing.
