    Unbelievable

    Scenario:

Client hands me a laptop 8 months ago as it needed to be formatted and re-installed.
Job was done, laptop was delivered, everything fine.

    Problem:

Client calls me today for a totally different IT problem. I go there, quote, and while I'm there, client says, "Oh now that you're here, this laptop didn't work since you dropped it off last time. I just kept on forgetting to call you to let you know".

    Question:

WTF. 8 months you forgot to call me?

How would you respond to this problem? Would you charge the client AGAIN? What would your response be when he tells you, "I just didn't get round to calling you since you dropped it off to let you know it's still faulty".

    Your thoughts please. If any.

Yep. take the laptop, find the problem, and look at the date that files were created.

If recent files, then he's lying to you. Either he pays your bill, or you re-sell the goods to defray expenses.

You'll also have to weigh up the other work he does give you ( note : does give, not promises to give in future ) .vs. the cost of fixing the laptop.

Either way, I would at least invoice for the parts required.

ps .. when you return the laptop, show him there and then that it is working.

ps2 .. amend terms and conditions to cover your back-side next time.

@ Murdock - next time you be humble and say "let me go re-check that geyser again".

Remove / undo all the bits you fixed and THEN you walk out.

ps .. and leave a note tucked away where the next contractor finds it.

Well, the quote was accepted for the other work, so I'll "fix" the laptop this time at no charge. It doesn't take too long & I have the time. I was just really shocked when it was there for "8 months" without a single phone call.

Thank you to all for the replies.
