[Opinion] Management Consultant vs. Business Consultant

    Hello All,

I wanted to know what would you as a customer looking for business\management services consider Management Consultants to be vs Business Consultants?

and when\in what situation would you call either 1 in to your business if it was required?

    Thanks,

I'd plumb for Management Consultants. Business Consultant is a bit ethereal for my liking

There are numerous specialised fields in consulting, but I would differentiate between Management consulting and Business Consulting.

Management consulting has to do with the managing of the business and is more on a strategic level. This may include change management, HR, IR, strategic planning, etc.

Business consulting is more on the operational or production level in a specific area of expertise, such as an IT specialist, marketing expert or even your accountant sorting out your tax problems.

A business consultant can be anyone with a technical or expert qualification or experience and normally covers one area of expertise only, whilst a management consultant will cover the whole spectrum, but more on a strategic level and not in such detail. Management consultants often call in the experts to sort out a specific problem that they have identified. (Thinkers and doers)

Why would you use a consultant? Only if you have a problem that you can not solve and if you have the money to pay for someone else to fix it. How much should you pay? Fees should be performance based to ensure best value for money. Who should you ask for advice? The guy with the reputation and proven results. Ask for references and do not be shy to negotiate up front.

In terms of naming for a consulting type company what would your think would be more appealing to clients.

          Joes Management Solutions

          Thanks,

I would not really know- what's in a name? Do they get results? I personally prefer solutions as that is what the client requires.
