    Phutuma Nathi

    Here is the recent e mail I sent out:

    You will have heard about Phutuma Nathi.

    This is a share offer to buy shares in Multi Choice South Africa ("MCSA").

    MCSA is the broadcaster of DSTV / M Net.

    MCSA is owned and controlled by Naspers.

    Naspers owns M Web, Supersport, 24.com (with all that goes with that such as FIN24)

    Naspers owns the publications issued by Media 24, such as Natal Witness, various magazines (see the Media 24 website at http://www.media24.com/) including those issued by "Touchline Media" such as Touchline Media, such as:
    Bicycling South Africa
    FitPregnancy
    Golf Digest South Africa
    Kick Off
    Men's Health
    Men's Health Living
    Runner's World
    Sports Illustrated
    Shape
    The Wisden Cricketer SA

    etc etc.

    Phutuma Nathi is only for "black" people. Coloured and Indian people are "classified" by Naspers as "black".

    Pale ones are excluded from the share offer.

    It is therefor discriminatory.

    I know what I'm going to do to protest:

    1. Cancel my Finweek subscription;
    2. Cancel Runners World subscription;
    3. As soon as there is another choice available (Maybe early next year), I'll cancel DSTV;
    4. Let them know why I'm doing this; and
    5. Avoid ANY of their "products" in future.

    Unfortunately, it's a pretty fine share. This is a company that has broken out of SA in a fairly big way and looks to have a bright future.

    I wonder if the beneficiaries will be the usual suspects.
    Participation is voluntary.

      The names of the majority of directors are quite interesting: Vosloo, Becker, Van Zyl, Du Plessis, Van Heerden, Willemse (he may qualify for shares!) and Jonker. [See http://www.naspers.co.za/English/management.asp ]

      I seem to recall another organization where the members had similar surnames!

        I personally think it is insulting that you can only "be black" to qualify...I also would like to protest this as being grossly racial and as I for one don't have any account to take away from them... what would be a practical way to object to this? I can agree this should be a South African thing but not a black african...after all arn't we all african.

          I'm glad to see you haven't totally lost your sense of humour over this. Or is that more a sense of irony

          I'll be soooo happy the day we get past all the racist stuff.

              Maybe they are just trying an easier way to fill out their BEE (black economic extortion) quota?
