    Irritating April

I don't know how everyone else is going, but April is proving to be quite irritating. With only 17 normal working weekdays, it is proving to be a test.

And this week everyone seems to be waiting on the election.

How are you finding things this month?

definitely an air of election fever. I saw possibly the most amazing advertisement for "vote ANC." or at least the place. postcard sized on the front window of a taxi. considering the numbers that will see that, pretty effective.

      Truly amazing!
Even during the inevitable accident report "VOTE ANC" marketing continues!

April is a shocker at the moment Dave, really depressing. Even in good times April is always challenging with all the holidays, holiday fever in estate agency. Our light this month is that we may close a decent amount of rentals... or else!

Terrible month so far, but have done a lot of scanning which kept us busy. Also just delivered some "kopyguard" certificates for an academy which has copy hidden in the background plus numbered. So I will try other universities etc. now.
Only stress when you can change the outcome!

hmmm, well don't know how business overall is going for the co, but as the programmer, I've been optimising queries and deleting/optimising unnecessary code. and that will bring some smiles hopefully ^^

Agree, April has always been a bit of a pain in the@ss! Not only do we loose business, but you have to have a budget, for the outings, meals etc. You know, April/Easter is a "mini Xmas!"

I'm in the Petroleum Industry, and this month has been absolutely horrendous. Also, we are currently in the midst of a transport strike, so deliveries are also affected. Just hope it blows over quickly.

              Best Regards

Here is a thought? Why not get rid of all the holidays and all religious holidays. And force your employees to work 16 hours a day instead of the just the normal 13 hours. Then you can cut their pay by half! Also why allow them to have fun? Rather put it into contract that if your employee smiles they will be fired and will be taken to court for disrupting the work force. Also limited there lunch break to only 7 seconds’ and 30 second toilet breaks between every 10 hours of work. That will optimise profit! Also you have the joy to watch your employees committing family suicides. Now that sounds like real fun now doesn’t it! And you as the boss can take bets on who will crack first! Fun all around!!!!

But maybe the holiday market did OK then

What's irritating me is there is no rhythm, no sense of momentum. Looking at my numbers it would have been a great month - now it's just going to be mediocre. Which given all the effort that has gone into it feels a trifle unsatisfying.

I'm pretty pleased with my staff though - they've given it full tilt to do what they have done despite all the "interruptions."

You really need to find another job, mate. That's simply not normal

Shame on you! That is not the answer I expected... I thought there will be an all new meaning of the word sweatshop... with the air-conditioner turned on high just to get that extra musky sweaty smell that most bosses love. Also fear filled faces with gloom hanging over your employee’s heads as they work harder and harder and you get to pay them in actual peanuts...

Yes and don’t forget that they have to skip lunch because they blinked more then what is allowed on contract! Also remember a good lashing every now and again will keep the motivation high thus getting maximum performance.

Oh! Yes darn it! I forgot that we live in a free world! Or do we? Have a look around the public holidays had no effect on most if not all the businesses because every single one I past on my way to deliver Pizza was open. ....

I've told you before - not every business owner is a bastard. Not every manager is a slave driver.

Just as not every employee is worth what they earn. Some are worth more and some are worth less. And some just cost you money.

There now - I got mean in the end. Happy now?

Now... now no need for that... Was just illustrating a point... I know there are good on both sides just as there is bad on both sides of every story. It is just... I was pointing out that sometimes a breather is a good thing despite some profit loss...

Given that 50% of April is taken up by Public Holidays, as well as the fact that it is virtually the only month in my industry without deadlines, I have taken leave and vegetated at Ballito for 2 glorious weeks, so I'm not complaining.

I do, however, agree that we really cannot afford the lost man-hours/productivity, less so in the current economic climate where SA has not yet really felt the effects like the rest of the globe.

But I will ponder more about this problem on Monday, when I catch up on the daytime TV soaps and Dr Phil.........
