The software for all prepaid electricity meters in South Africa will expire in 2024. Prepaid metering software must be updated or customers won’t be able to recharge their meters with new tokens, and will be left without a power supply, cautions the City of Cape Town.

This applies to prepaid water meters as well, but there is an alternative that will not leave you stranded.

I wonder just how much of a mess this is going to cause when it happens - I cannot see how all of the meters in the country will be fixed in time.
