I think that Google is absolutely brilliant at strategy and tactics. Microsoft just bought a chunk of Facebook (which Google was also bidding for), and now Google releases an open platform for building social applications.
Well, I for one think that facebook can improve allot on their usability. Their homepage makes it exceptionally difficult for newcomers to understand what they are about. If it wasn't for their exceptional SMO they would not have been as strong as they are. The other Social networking sites are even worse in that regard.
However I cannot see Google impacting on Facebook yet, for that Facebook are to far ahead already. Everyone else including Google will have to play catchup. Myspace would join, because they realize they have major competition in Facebook. I wouldn't say it is checkmate yet, maybe check, but lets see what the next move will be...
I signed up for Orkut, Google has quite a few things to do in order to catch up to even MySpace, nevermind Facebook... Overly unimpressed with Orkut at this stage
The issue here is not the social network. What Google has created (along with MySpace) is a framework that applications can be built on which will run on ANY social network.
Facebook has a proprietary language which means that applications built for Facebook are only for Facebook.
Googles OpenSocial allows developers to write only a single application which will run on all of the networks which support OpenSocial. Also, it uses normal javascript and html, rather than Facebook's unique language, which means already existing code can be used or modified easily for the application.
