Hi guys this is my first official post

ok this is my dilema im a 26 year old young woman with a passion for cooking its really been something that ive been wanting to pursue for ages now i just didnt know how to go about it. i had an idea of supplying lunches to my husbands office and surrounding companies and i had sent them samples and they loved them that was 3 months ago now the problem is my husband has just got a job offer to richards bay and i want to move with him i do have a job as admin but i hate it we have managed to save up about 200k and im thinking of moving to richards bay and starting a corner store/mini restaurants/take away type of business how possible is this on this budget considering the licenses that id have to get furniture and rent and stock ... please help

It's not impossible and licenses might not even be needed. Assuming you want to start of selling from your kitchen and not open an official rented space/shop yet?

I think you have a good budget as a startup. And follow your heart. If you don't love admin jobs then quit and lunch your own business and hire one/two admin for your business. ha ha. I wish you a great success.

Just take the first step and go for it. Risk it to get the biscuit. Be sure you have a decent plan to make it work though.

Hi

To serve food you usually need a Certificate of Acceptability. Don't think there is a cost for this (or it's marginal). You would need to check with the municipality and think they do an inspection to check suitability. (Not exactly sure of the process).

Worth checking what other food businesses are in the area and chat to a couple of them to see opportunities / challenges.

My advise would be to not quit your day job just yet, try bootrstrap the business at the most minimal cost possible, launch and test the market before committing resources to it i.e. signing a lease agreement etc, scale up once you have a response and build from there.

Also be careful not to pursue your passion as a business, open your mind to other products, rather be passionate about entrepreneurship because once you start you won't be doing what you love i.e. cooking, you will an entrepreneur which is a different role all together.

I'd be wary of juping into a lease aggreement especially in a place you may not be too familiar with. Richards Bay to me immediately suggests mostly very seasonal tourist based trade. Maybe look at a symbiotic arrangement with an existing and established business such as a busy campsite where you would be enhancing their customer experience and you could agree to a profit share based arrangement, at least to start with, rather than a formal lease for premises.
