I am opening a retail shop within the coming weeks. I have everything in place except a POS system. I've done some reseash and there is no way that I am paying R14k for a system. Does anybody have experience with POS systems especially public domain systems and the issues related using ean13 barcodes in conjunction with in-house code3of9 codes. Is it better just to use in-house barcodes throughout?

We use a POS system that we pay for monthly. Most POS suppliers include the hardware at inflated prices, which makes the overall cost higher.
As far as barcodes, we use only our own, but I know some of my wholesale customers uses standard + in-house barcodes successfully. Ultimately a barcode represents a number that is entered automatically into the system by the barcode scanner, nothing more. Once the number is in the system, all the information is picked up through that.Sometimes the only transport available is a leap of faith -

Not sure about the barcode side of things - I dumped them and just started using a two line pricing gun with a unique code. Printing barcodes are a pain if you are carry many lines. But have been very happy with this cheap POS system and have used it for years after trying many free ones. There is a demo to download. http://www.denverresearch.com/Comment

Hi Adrian, congrats on opening of your retail outlet. What do you need from your POS? Do you want it to support different pricing structures such as specials and discounts? Do you need it to integrate with Pastel? What kind of daily/weekly/monthly reporting setup will you require. I assume you are retailing items you manufacture so do you need it to integrate with the back end of another system you might use for manufacturing bill of materials on different products and manufacturing component stock levels etc? Or are you just after a dumb-assed till system?_______________________________________________

I don't want to get anything too complex or expensive. A PC based open source system with basic reporting capabilities. I would like to be able to export data to Pastel. There is no way that I am going to spend a hell of a lot of money on it now, I just want to get started. I'm sure that I will need to upgrade the system as the business develops.Comment
